We heard people talk about the rationale behind the new IIMA PGPX one-year MBA program, about the future of the program and ways in which it can benefit. This note discusses these issues to provide an idea to applicants on the future of the program and its importance in the years to come.
There is little doubt that this program was started by IIMA to compete for students with work experience who presently go to ISB or to programs abroad. There is a large number of professionals with 4 to 5 years of work experience who prefer an MBA program with others like them, not freshers straight out of college. The options for such people are limited. ISB and MBA programs abroad, which charge exorbitant fees and offer an extremely competitive admissions process. The biggest factor that is likely to have driven IIMA to introduce the one year program is the rising salaries of ISB students. Any company would pay more to an MBA graduate with prior work experience than to a person with no prior work experience.
All over the world an MBA is a program for people with work experience. An MBA is not a theoretical program like an engineering program. A student can make the most of an MBA when he or she comes to the program with specific learning objectives based on a clear understanding of their career goals. It takes 4 to 5 years at work to really understand your strengths and management roles where you are likely to be more effective.
The flagship two-year MBA program of IIMs does not take this important rationale into account as the majority of students in the class are fresh graduates or those with less than one or two years of work experience. But the popularity of the program makes it difficult for IIMA to tamper with the 2 year program. So the IIMA PGPX was born.
The one-year program can only grow with time. Companies are going to find recruiting MBAs with prior work experience more profitable. The class size is likely to grow, companies coming into recruit are going to increase and other IIMs are likely to follow.
So what is IIMA likely to look at when recruiting students for their PGPX program? Success of a program is determined by the kind of placements received by the passing class. The single most important factor that is likely to be looked at before selecting a candidate would be his/her employability on completion of the program.
You would get the admission if you can project yourself as someone who the recruiters are going to jump for, with your background, skills and experience. Keep this in mind while writing your essays and preparing for your interview.
