The launch of the IIMA PGPX program two years back saw an unprecedented interest in the program. Over this time the popularity of the IIMA one-year program for executives has soared way beyond expectation. There are students who already seem to prefer the IIM Ahmedabad program to the fairly well established ISB one-year porgram, which has been running for about five years now and has delivered great results.
The IIM Cal PGPEX program which is on similar lines as the IIMA PGPX is expected to catch up among the applicants at the same feverish pace. The international project, the small size of the intake and the strong IIM Calcutta branding are some of the highlights of the program. The school already has strong connections with the industry; top notch senior management placements should not really be an issue for a class of 60 to 70 students. In a year or two, after the first class of students graduate with great placements, the real value of the program would become more apparent to students.
To attract the best students, IIM Cal has timed its application process so as to make a student decide his or her participation in the program much before the decision time lines of the two competing programs of IIMA and ISB. If you are selected, you would have to accept your admission at IIM Calcutta by October 15. Payment of the first fee installment of Rs.3 lakhs would have to be made by this date. IIM Ahmedabad and ISB announce their decisions much later, by end October and January respectively.
The timing issue is not likely to suit applicants whose first choice is IIMA or ISB. Such applicants would not be able to use IIM Calcutta as a back up school. This is probably the main reason that IIM Calcutta has chosen to lead the other schools in the admission process. In fact the IIM Calcutta program session which starts in December would be well under way even before the first intake of ISB is announced.
The timing of the program is ideal for applicants who consider the school as their first choice. This can be difficult to ascertain for a student especially since it's a new program. IIM Calcutta would certainly be the top choice for those who are not very confident of making it to IIMA or ISB this year, probably also for those who did not make it to IIMA or ISB last year.
While this is how logic seems to suggest student choices would be made, there is another way of looking at things. There were 60 odd applicants who took the decision to join IIMA last year. A year later, IIMA is a top choice for many more applicants. There is no reason why IIM Calcutta will not head that way. It is soon likely to be among the top one-year programs in India.
