2010 Application Essays - Tips and Suggestions
Essay 1: Give 3 reasons as to why you should be selected to the class of 2011. These reasons should ideally differentiate you from the applicant pool and should be backed with some data. (300 words max)

Compare yourself with colleagues at work – especially teammates and peers. What makes you different from them? What is that one thing that you can do exceptionally well that others find difficult?
What is it about your career progress and future goals that will make you a student that ISB would want?
What special talents do you possess? What are a few interests you have pursued passionately for fairly long time?
What have you achieved outside of work that you are extremely proud of?
Essay 2: Describe a challenging assignment you have handled (at work or outside) to date. What were the challenges and how did you handle them. What were the personal learnings you derived from this assignment. (300 words max)

How did you manage an assignment that was challenging and what did you learn from it about managing challenging situations?
Dictionary.com definition of challenging: Calling for full use of one's abilities or resources in a difficult but stimulating effort.
Identify a situation that stretched you to go beyond yourself, which you managed with aplomb and now look back fondly upon.
We all have struggled to pass difficult exams, but avoid writing about an exam situation here. You want to show that your recent past has been exciting and challenging and you have grown by overcoming the challenges. Choose the experience wisely.
Identify an experience through which you can showcase your leadership and managerial skills.
Essay 3: Briefly assess your career progression till date along with your assessment of your future career goals. Discuss how your career goals will be met by the ISB’s one year program. (300 words max)

Describe how your career has progressed so far.
Show how the ISB program will bridge the gap between who you are today and what you wish to become in the future.
Essay 4 (OPTIONAL): Please provide additional information, if any, that will significantly affect the consideration of your application to the ISB. Please do not repeat information which has already been stated elsewhere in the application. You may use this to clarify any breaks in education/work, inform about any other item which you think has not been covered elsewhere etc. (300 words max)
At most times, writing this essay brings more harm than benefit. Keep away from it unless you have a compelling reason to write it.
Don't write this essay unless you have a problem to address.
Be tactful in addressing the problem. Ask yourself: Are you addressing the problem or are you highlighting it?
Don't make lame excuses. They never worked when you were a kid. They aren't going to work even now.
